HISTORY OF THE CHISUM WAR OR LIFE OF IKE FRIDGE. STIRRING EVENTS OF COWBOY LIFE ON THE FRONTIER. Isaac ("Ike") Fridge's firsthand account of the Chisum war as told to author Jodie Smith, detailing the harsh realities of 1870s cowboy life along the Pecos River in New Mexico during the range war between cattle baron John Chisum and neighboring ranchers, farmers, and Mescalero Apaches, all of whom Chisum accused of stealing his cattle or using his grazing land and depleting its resources. The book also includes stories of Billy the Kid (William H. Bonney) and his involvement in the range war as a Chisum ally, and of Bonney's death at the hands of Sheriff Pat Garret. "Dobie said of this book that it is 'as compact as jerked beef and as laconic as conversation in alkali dust.' Fridge went to New Mexico with Chisum in 1869. Later he returned to Texas; the narrative goes through 1880" - Reese, SIX SCORE. Adams and Dykes assess Fridge's recollections of Billy the Kid's raids against the Chisum Ranch and the Kid's death. Dobie notes that the book is virtually "unprocurable," though Adams says he later found a small remainder, which was quickly exhausted.
