An attractive edition of the Epistulae ad familiares, Cicero’s ‘Letters to Friends’, his correspondence with contemporaries in the Roman Republic. The second volume contains commentaries on the letters by a veritable who’s who of contemporary humanists and scholars, including the printer, Henri Estienne, himself, along with Denis Lambin, Adrien Turnebe, Girolamo Ragazzoni, and Paolo Manutius, of the great Manutius printing dynasty. Provenance: Macclesfield North Library bookplate and shelf-mark 116.B.26-27 in both volumes. Some internal browning, offsetting from calf turn-ins at front and rear. Renouard p. 144, no. 1.
