REGISTER EXTRA. CENTRAL, THURSDAY, 13th, 1865. JOHNSON'S SURRENDER HE ACCEPTS GRANT'S CONDITIONS, AND IS COMING BACK! SHERMAN STILL PUSHING ON! HE OCCUPIES RALEIGH, N.C. [masthead and ... A rare "extra" issue of Central City, Colorado's Miners' Register, reporting on the occupation of Raleigh by General Sherman, expectations for the forthcoming restoration of the Union, and other events around the end of the Civil War. The Register, "the first completely authenticated printing at Central City," began as a tri-weekly in 1862 and quickly became "one of the most important and influential [papers] of territorial Colorado" (McMurtrie). The publishers had their work cut out for them the week beginning from April 7, 1865. Despite being a daily newspaper at this point, the Register was forced to put out four extra issues, beginning with "Gen. Lee and Whole Army! Bagged!" and ending the morning of the 15th with "The President is Murdered in the Presence of his Family." The printers' struggle to keep up with the rapid pace of events is evident from the unusually high density of typographical errors in the present issue, including misspelling "Thusday" in the dateline. This issue is dated April 13 (though likely printed the following day), and reports on the continued successes of Union forces following Lee's surrender. The text notes the occupation of Raleigh (effected on the 13th), expresses concerns about the severity of Seward's injuries (suffered in a carriage accident on April 5),
