This is second of Cornwell's five contemporary sailing novels, written to deliberately counterpoint his successful historical fiction series, Sharpe. The novel follows John Rossendale, the 28th Early of Stowey, as he sails the seas to avoid the duties of his aristocratic inheritance. The US issue of Sea Lord was published later the same year under the title Killer's Wake.
