Goupil Fesquet, an artist known particularly for his works on ornament and design, accompanied Vernet on his tour of the Middle East (Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Santorini, Crete and Smyrna) in 1839-40. The plates are particularly vivid, and include one of Vernet in oriental dress. The plates were done after daguerreotypes taken during the voyage - some of the first taken in the area.
