Der Heizer. First edition of The Stoker, the only part of his first novel published during Kafka's lifetime. Believing that "of the entire book only the first chapter stems from an inner truth" (Letters, p. 218), the author abandoned the novel and issued its introduction here as a separate story. The complete work was edited posthumously by Max Brod as Amerika (1927).Inspired by Dickens, the story is unusually optimistic for the period in which Kafka also wrote The Metamorphosis and The Judgment.
