[SAMMELBAND OF FIVE RENAISSANCE HUMANIST WORKS, INCLUDING ONE OF THE EARLIEST PRINTED REFERENCES TO THE EUROPEAN DISCOVERY OF THE NEW WORLD]. A sammelband of Renaissance humanist writings, featuring five separately issued works from both north and south of the Alps, all published between the late 15th and early 16th centuries and superbly bound in contemporary half blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, probably by the "Steiffer Hirsch I" binder in Erfurt. Contents include works by Marsilio Ficino, Baptista Mantuanus, Rabanus Maurus, and Desiderius Erasmus. Of particular Americana interest is Mantuanus' De Patientia, containing one of the earliest printed references to the European discovery of the New World. The sammelband is handsomely bound in contemporary half blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, with the remnants of the two original brass clasps to the front board. The leather is decorated in blind with a variety of tools documented in Schunke-Schwenke and attributed to the "Steiffer Hirsch I" binder in Erfurt. Leather on the boards is ruled in blind and features an outer border of arrow-pierced hearts, each within a rhombus. Tools used within the borders include Schunke-Schwenke Hund 36 (a dog), Hirsch 35 (a stag), Herz 75 (heart pierced by arrow), Blüte Vierblatt 112 (four-leaf flower), and Rosette 581a (rose).
