Chapter 10 of Samuel Purchas' seminal Hakluytus Postumus or Purchas His Pilgrimes, extracted from the 1625 first complete edition, being the chapter devoted to Pedro Fernandez de Quiros' monumental Eighth Memorial, describing his "discovery" of Terra Australis and its wonders, and petitioning for permission to settle and found a Christian colony there. The memorial was originally published in Spanish in 1609, with the first separate English edition appearing in 1617. This is thus a very early English translation of this most influential work, extracted from one of the great collections of travels in English. Also present in this chapter of Purchas is the original Spanish text of one of Quiros' other memorials, this describing the route from Peru and the details of the geography and indigenous inhabitants of several of the Solomon Islands.Quiros (1563-1615), a veteran of expeditions to the Pacific who sailed through Torres Strait without ever actually setting foot on the Australian mainland, was nonetheless convinced that he had discovered the greatly desired southern continent, and petitioned vigorously for its settlement.
