Allemagne. Le Rhin de Bale a Dusseldorf

£1,500 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

second French edition of Le Rhin The text was translated from the seventh edition of "Rheinreise" and this is one of the earliest French editions. This copy is bound in the attractive yellow pictorial bindings known as Biedermeier, the period 1815-1848 is often (in German-speaking countries) referred to as the Biedermeier period in art and especially with reference to a style of furniture. The architectural and landscape designs on these bindings always represent the area covered in the Baedeker. They are considered to be highly collectible and are very rare in this condition. Second edition, xxiv, 258pp, 15 engraved views, folding map at rear ( in two parts), 9 plans, some very minor spotting on preliminary pages; bound in the publisher's original rare Biedermeier yellow pictorial boards, title has been pasted down on upper board, some wear to the spine; overall a very good copy of this rare early Baedeker.
