SHELLWORK BINDING.

Inquire · Offered by Peter Harrington

Notebook. A lovely example of shellwork applied to a blank pocket book, perhaps a dance card. This decorative practice evolved from the 18th-century European mania for shell collecting. In the 19th century it was applied to a wide range of objects, either as domestic handicraft or for seaside souvenirs. From the mid-century in France, such adornment survives on books, usually devotional volumes.
