The Heart of the Antarctic. First edition, presentation copy of the three-volume deluxe issue, inscribed by Shackleton on the front free endpaper of Heart of the Antarctic Volume I, "To my friend and co-author ifj. Hegedüs Sandor with warmest thoughts and best wishes from Ernest H. Shackleton. 5th April 1911. Paris." A Hungarian explorer and travel writer, Hegedüs (1875-1953) was the godfather to Shackleton's son, Edward, and assisted Shackleton with his fortune-seeking in Budapest.Both Heart of the Antarctic and Antarctic Book were limited to 300 copies, the former individually numbered (this set contains number 198). All 300 copies of Antarctic Book were signed by Shackleton, members of the shore party, and Aeneas Mackintosh, who was invalided out early in the expedition. Here, the volume is in the corrected state, signified by an absence of any reference to "Aurora Australis" in the table of contents. This deluxe issue is "one of the most handsome productions in the Antarctic canon" (Rosove).Shackleton began writing Heart of the Antarctic almost immediately after reaching New Zealand, himself and his publisher keen to capitalize on worldwide interest in the expedition. Two years after publication, Shackleton was intent on further riches, travelling to Europe frequently in the first half of 1911 to lecture and to try and secure a gold-mine concession in Hungary.
