Grand Bal de Nuit.

£8,750 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

The scarce and impressive large-scale poster designed by Goncharova. Natalia Goncharova designed this poster for the Grand Bal des Artistes held at the Salle Bullier, Paris, on February 23, 1923. Her poster reveals the influence of Cubism in its fragmented spatial composition against a flat space with hard-edge silhouettes suggestive of figures. The emigrant Russian artistic community in Montparnasse became very active in the years before World War I and the large ball they hosted every year in order to raise money for their association was one of the highlights of the Parisian avant-garde season. This poster appears in two variants: with and without the text which wraps itself around the design. Lithograph in colours on thin wove poster paper laid onto board, fold-marks and skilful repairs, trimmed at the bottom (110 x 76 cm).
