William Gordon Burn Murdoch’s account of the Dundee Whaling Expedition, on which he served as assistant to William Speirs Bruce, as well as expedition artist, aboard the ship Balaena . “Murdoch’s narrative covers the voyage south at great length, providing a fascinating picture of shipboard life, together with chanteys and yars in Scottish dialect. […] The Antarctic portion of the narrative contains astute observations of the wildlife and sealing operations. Bruce contributed a chapter summarizing the scientific observations […] farther south his content dissipated as he witnessed the single-mindedness of the sealing operations and the ghastliness of the butchery.” (Rosove). Rosove, 234.A1.a. “Uncommon”; Spence, 825.
