This exceptionally rare and malevolently racist broadside from the 1866 Pennsylvania gubernatorial election is an attack on Republican candidate, John White Geary, for his support of African-American suffrage. Located to just the Library of Congress by OCLC, the broadside has a single auction record but is otherwise absent from the marketplace. The broadside ostensibly illustrates the September 1866 Radical Republican Convention held in Philadelphia, with a procession of White men arm in arm with Black men with a cheering crowd of Black men looking on from a dais. The text below reads "EVERY RADICAL CANDIDATE for United States Senator took part. WHITE MEN & WOMEN are you ready for this?" The election campaign of 1866 was fought primarily over the national issues, with the Fourteenth Amendment being the most prominent among them. The Republicans, led by Geary, placed themselves squarely behind African-American suffrage proposed in Fourteenth Amendment, with the Democrat candidate for governor, Hiester Clymer, representing the beliefs of his party by stating "the white race alone is entitled to control the government of the Republic, and we are unwilling to grant negroes the right to vote" (quoted in McPhearson).
