Freshly translated Golden Cockerel Press edition of one of the great pieces of British literature from the Middle Ages. Gwyn Jones and Thomas Jones's translation was the first since Lady Charlotte Guest's from over a hundred years prior. Captain Richard Campbell (1933-2023) was a hydrographer in the Navy who served on the Dalrymple during the Suez Crisis in 1956, the Endurance (1969-71) surveying the Antarctic, the Beagle (1971-72) surveying islands in the Indian Ocean, and captained the survey vessel Hydra which was converted into a hospital ship during the Falklands War, for which he was awarded an OBE. Limited edition, number 405 of 550 copies; 4to (36 x 23 cm); illustrated throughout with wood-blocks by Dorothea Braby, previous owner's bookplate to pastedown; original half levant morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, cloth boards with elaborate gilt-stamped motif to upper board, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, touch of rubbing to corners, a near-fine copy; 266pp.
