Poesie. First edition of the first published collection by the young poet and celebrated salonnière. Issued when Palli was only 21, Poesie followed the success of her poetic improvisations. Her salon was frequented by Lord Byron, Ugo Foscolo, Firmin Didot, and other leading intellectuals. The volume also includes Italian translations and dramatic works.Angelica Palli (1798–1875), the daughter of a Greek merchant in Livorno, wrote poetry, tragedies, novels, and translations of major English and French authors into Italian. Influenced by Enlightenment ideals, she was also politically active. Her feminist address to young mothers, Discorso di una donna alle giovani maritate del suo paese (1851), advocated women's emancipation, and she financially supported the Greek national cause during and after the War of Independence. Poesie reflects both Palli's support for Greek independence and her experience of exile as a Greek expatriate in Tuscany, themes that recurred throughout her literary career.WorldCat locates only one copy outside Italy, at the New York Public Library.
