MINERS' RECORD. Volume 1. Number 1. The very rare first issue landmark Colorado newspaper, the first published in the South Park region, inscribed on the front page with a brief pencil note from proprietor, William N. Byers. Byers (1831-1901) was no stranger to pioneering publications – in 1859, he earned himself a permanent place in Western history by establishing the Rocky Mountain News of Denver, the first newspaper printed in Colorado. He also became the territory's first postmaster after championing the creation of the Denver post office, primarily to supply stories for his paper. A tireless promoter of the Colorado territory, the short-lived weekly Miners' Record represented yet another of his attempts to tout the territory's virtues, this time among the mines of the South Park grassland. First published at the "Tarryall Mines" on July 4, 1861, Byers describes the purpose of the Miners' Record as follows:"In a word we desire to make the Miners Record the miners best friend, a channel by which he can learn all the stiring [sic] and interesting news of the world at large, and which will at the same time convey to his friends in the states or elsewhere, the incidents, events and results of his life and his labors in the very heart of the Rocky Mountains."This first issue of the paper prints the newly-passed Colorado Organic Act in full, and focuses largely on Civil War news and discussion of the upcoming elections for the Territory's first government.
