Footnotes in the Sand.

An uncommon memoir of the author’s service as British Political Resident in the Persian Gulf. It is a valuable account of the principal events of the 1950s (such as the Suez Crisis) and how they shaped the internal politics and international relations of Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and the United Arab Emirates. “This book is not intended to be a history of the Persian Gulf during the years 1953-58. It is a selective picture of what it felt like to be Political Resident there. It attempts to give an account of what British policy was towards that area, what British policy looked like from the Gulf and, with the help of the Public Record Office papers, what the Gulf looked like from London.” (p.7).
