They all sang: From Tony Pastor to Rudy Valle´e Hardcover – January 1, 1934 by Edward Bennet Marks (Author) A trip back to the music business and pop culture of the late-1800s to the mid-1930s, this is the book for you. The author, Edward Marks, takes the reader on a trip into the American music-publishing business in New York City during these years. Throughout this book he mentions the names of many a songwriter, singer, actor, actress, lyricist. Many of the names are long forgotten to many of us but some well-known names appear. Two features of the book are interesting. First, his periodic references to "ragtime," a musical style which, along with some other musical styles, would evolve into jazz. Next, his references to emerging technologies (which we take for granted these days) is informative and entertaining. The emergence of sound recordings, movies, movie theaters, movie companies, and radio are weaved into his narrative along with the impact they had
