Eros: The Bittersweet. First edition, the author's first book of essays. Based on Carson's 1981 doctoral theses, the work studies the concept of "eros" in ancient Greece literature, beginning with Sappho's poetry and her invented adjective "glukupikros" (bittersweet). Eros: The Bittersweet was widely acclaimed and was voted onto the 1999 Modern Library Reader's List for the 100 best non-fiction books of the 20th century. In her opening chapter, Carson muses that "eros prints as the same contradictory fact: love and hate converge within sexual desire. Why?". These themes are constant throughout her wide-ranging publications, which include poetry, verse novels, and translations.
