THE WORLD ENCOMPASSED BY SIR FRANCIS DRAKE [with:] THE RELATION OF A WONDERFULL VOIAGE MADE BY WILLIAM CORNELISON SCHOUTEN OF HORNE. An attractive facsimile printing of the original edition of two of the most important works in the history of exploration, the narrative of Sir Francis Drake's famous circumnavigation of the world and the cross-Pacific voyage of Willem Schouten. Drake's circumnavigation (1577–80), the second such voyage (after Magellan), extended British maritime power into the Pacific for the first time, threatened the Spanish empire in America, opened a new age in British seamanship, and made Drake a rich man. For reasons of secrecy and diplomacy, the full story of the voyage went unpublished until nearly fifty years later, with only short accounts appearing in Hakluyt and De Bry. It is largely based on the narrative of the chaplain of the voyage, Francis Fletcher, but with considerable editorial additions and deletions, probably by Drake's heirs. Schouten was the first to sail to the South Pacific by way of Cape Horn (which he gave its name), accomplished 1615–17 (though published in 1619, ten years prior to Drake's narrative). This facsimile was printed by offset lithography in Milan; the accompanying pamphlet laid in to the box provides a historical introduction by British historian A.L. Rowse and brief bibliographical notes by Robert Dougan, librarian at the Huntington Library. An appealing printing of two important works.
