First edition of Jewish hymns for cantor and chorus, in three parts. In our copy 32 additional note-sheet pages bound at the end of the book, filled by hand with additional hymns by two (or three?) different hands. The Introduction includes commendations from noted contemporary composers, such as Ignaz Lachner, Louis Spohr and Georg Goltermann. J.M. Jafet (Israel Meyer Japhet, 1818—1892) was a teacher, choir director and grammarian. He obtain his first choral director and religious teacher position at the age of 17. Later, as choir director at the Realschule (Adass Jeschurun) in Frankfurt am Main under Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, Japhet composed music for synagogue use, with many of his compositions still being used today.
