Near Jackson, Mississippi (circa 1970).

£37,500 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

This print was exhibited in "Cruel and Tender," the first major exhibition dedicated to photography at Tate, London (May 5–September 7, 2003), and at Museum Ludwig, Cologne (November 29, 2003 – February 18, 2004). Near Jackson, Mississippi, is the final image in William Eggleston's Guide (1976), Eggleston's masterfully sequenced book about boyhood, which perfectly demonstrates his 'ability to monumentalize the minutiae of mundane life' as John Szarkowski put it. Dye-transfer print (55.2 x 35.9 cm, 23¾ x 19¼ in), signed in ink in the margin, 'William Eggleston Artistic Trust' stamp on verso, Edition 2/9. Framed.
