The Art of Lubov Tchernicheva
£4,750 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books
A scarce publication capturing a piece of dance history, published by Cyril W. Beaumont, the legendary London dance scholar, critic and specialist bookseller. When Sergei Diaghilev's world-famous Ballets Russes returned to London after the First World War, the majestic Russian ballerina Lubov Tchernicheva became a major star among British audiences. Capitalising on this ballet mania, Beaumont produced a highly limited, high-end celebratory edition. Describing Tchernicheva in his work, Beaumont calls her 'arresting and majestic'. Lubov Tchernicheva and Tamara Karsavina were both prima ballerinas of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Karsavina was the older, established global icon, while Tchernicheva was the reigning favourite of the post-war London seasons. First edition; large 4to (32.2 x 28 cm), publisher's illuminated wrappers, edges slightly rubbed; 1 monochrome portrait frontispiece, 8 full-page character illustration plates; 28 pp.
