The Works. First edition, number 102 of 780 sets signed by the author in the first volume only. The volumes comprise The Works (after Beerbohm's grandiosely titled debut book of 1896); More; Yet Again; And Even Now; A Christmas Garland; Zuleika Dobson; Seven Men; Around Theatres I; Around Theatres II; and A Variety of Things. In his preface, Beerbohm muses on the nature of library sets and describes his stipulations for his own. "They must be in physical proportion to the spirit and ambition of the writer. Also, their aspect must be of a simple-gay kind, as opposed to the ornate-dismal. [Let them] be all of different colours, so that hereafter on shelves every one of them should seem not to have lost utterly its own little soul" (I, p. xii). The set collects Beerbohm's theatre criticism for the first time.
