French-language biography of Amerigo Vespucci by journalist, diplomat, historian, and collector Henry Vignaud. Vignaud (1830-1922) was born Jean-Héliodore in New Orleans, Louisiana, to parents of French descent, and later changed his name to Henry Vignaud. He worked for a time as a journalist in New Orleans, editing two weekly papers there. During the Civil War, he served the Confederacy as a captain in the 6th Louisiana Regiment and was taken prisoner in 1862 with the capture of New Orleans by Union forces, but he managed to escape and fled to Paris, never to return to the United States. He served briefly in the Confederate diplomatic mission to France and afterward in the Romanian legation at Paris. In 1875, he was appointed secretary of the United States legation in Paris, a position in which he served with distinction until retiring in 1909. Thereafter, he dedicated himself to historical scholarship. Vignaud's interest in Europe's encounter with the New World - and with Christopher Columbus in particular - stemmed from his association with Henry Harrisse, Manuel de la Rosa, and other so-called Américanistes.
