THE DETAIL AND CONDUCT OF THE AMERICAN WAR, UNDER GENERALS GAGE, HOWE, BURGOYNE, AND VICE ADMIRAL LORD HOWE: WITH A VERY FULL AND CORRECT STATE OF THE WHOLE OF THE EVIDENCE, AS GIVEN BEFORE A ... The third edition, expanded from two earlier editions of 1779 under the title A View of the Evidence Relative to the Conduct of the American War..... This edition is markedly superior to and much rarer than the earlier editions, including dozens of new documents. Often ascribed to Joseph Galloway, this pamphlet contains testimony from Galloway, Johnstone, Mauduit, and others as to the conduct of the British military during the American Revolution. In large part, it is a detailed analysis of the arguments for and against Howe's command in America, from his appointment in 1775 to his reassignment, supported by excerpts from letters to and from the general. A valuable contemporary record of Revolutionary events, described at the time by The Monthly Review as "written with a spirit, that may serve alternatively to freeze and fire the blood of the indignant reader." Scarce to the market, this important revolutionary war reference hasn't been seen at auction in nearly twenty years.
