REPORT ON THE EXPLORATION OF THE YELLOWSTONE RIVER, BY BVT. BRIG. GEN. W.F. RAYNOLDS. COMMUNICATED BY THE SECRETARY OF WAR, IN COMPLIANCE WITH A RESOLUTION OF SENATE, FEBRUARY 13, ... This copy bears a pencil inscription on the front pastedown, dated 1869, apparently recording that it was given to an "E. Clarke" courtesy of "Gen. Meigs," though the inscription does not appear to be in the hand of Gen. Montgomery Meigs. Although a preliminary version of this report was issued as a government document in 1860, the Civil War and Raynolds' illness prevented publication of the complete, definitive report until this edition. Raynolds was instructed by the War Department to undertake an exploration and survey of the region in 1859. The party departed St. Louis on May 28 and returned via Omaha in October of 1860. The daily log is herein reprinted, with much information on the topography, Indians, agricultural and mineral prospects, etc. The "Map of the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers and their tributaries," measuring 27 x 41¾ inches, is one of the most important of the region and was extensively used as a guide for prospectors.
