A highly detailed and elaborately produced guide to the Cripple Creek mining district, printed in its heyday as the king of America's gold regions. Gold was discovered at Cripple Creek in 1891, and by 1900 it had become the most productive gold mine in the country, remaining so for the next twenty years. Though its population fell dramatically into the 1920s and 30s (down to about 400 in 1970), the district has seen a minor resurgence as a casino destination after gambling was legalized in 1991.This publication thus came at the height of the town's dominance, and the publisher describes it as "the best publication ever issued of the greatest mining camp in the world." Along with a brief history of the region, the text is primarily a comprehensive digest of the mining companies operating in the district, with detailed descriptions and diagrams of each firm's holdings and operations. The frontispiece is a photographic view of Cripple Creek. There are also views of Goldfield, Victor, the Portland Mine, Bull Cliffs, Altman, Raven Hill and Anaconda. The large folding map at the rear of the volume, according to the text, "shows in color the surface holdings of each company described herein.
