THE INDIAN TRIBES OF NORTH AMERICA WITH BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES AND ANECDOTES OF THE PRINCIPAL CHIEFS...A new edition, edited by Frederick Webb Hodge. The most notable modern printing of McKenney and Hall's magnum opus. McKenney, the commissioner of Indian Affairs, collaborated with James Hall, the prolific Cincinnati journalist, to produce this famous work, which takes the form of a series of biographies of leading chiefs or other Native American figures, written by Hall. The work is famous for its color plate portraits, based on original oil paintings by Charles Bird King and others. This Edinburgh edition collects all of the illustrations which were present in every earlier edition of the work, which varied considerably in number based on size and budget. In addition to the original text and numerous plates, this edition is enhanced by the first appearance of a long description of the original edition's publication, biographies of the authors, and a discussion of the 1865 fire at the Smithsonian which destroyed the vast majority of the original paintings. An attractive and accessible edition of one of the standard works of Americana.
