A scarce and important Mexican-American War pamphlet, printing the proceedings of peace negotiations between the United States and Mexican envoys in 1847. The text prints a variety of proposed treaties, counter-proposals, and other papers recording the process, including those of U.S. envoy Nicholas Trist, General Winfield Scott, General José de Herrera, and "many second-level but important figures in the search for peace" leading up to what would eventually become the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo (Tutorow). Texas, Alta California, and New Mexico are discussed in various segments, including Trist's offer to let Mexico retain San Diego harbor by establishing a southern boundary of California at the 33rd parallel, and an offer from the Mexican officials to buy back Texas from the United States. A note dated September 8, printed on the rear wrapper, states that: "In order not to delay the publication of such important documents, we print everything which has thus far happened in the Ministerio de Relaciones. We will publish the response of the United States commission as soon as it is received by the ministry" (our translation).
