Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. First Newell edition, scarce with both the dust jacket and publisher's box. This was the best-known of the many American illustrated editions published following Dodgson's death in 1898, and made Newell famous in his own right (Ovenden & Davis, p. 10). Newell, aware of the popularity of Tenniel's blonde Alice, wrote of his own dark-haired version that was an attempt to capture "a sweet, childish spirit at home in the midst of mystery".
