New Excursions into English Poetry. First editions, the complete set of this attractively produced wartime anthology series. Arranged into themes relating to nature, travel, and the crisis in Europe, the poetry is illustrated with newly commissioned chromolithographs by neo-romantic artists such as John Piper, John Craxton, Michael Ayrton, and Robert Colquhoun. The general editors were Sheila Dunbar Shannon (1913-2002) and W. J. R. Turner (1889-1946). Much like Turner's Britain in Pictures series, the New Excursions into English Poetry series sought to bolster national pride in the country's cultural and artistic heritage following the threat that the Second World War posed to British society.
