REPORT ON INDIANS TAXED AND NOT TAXED IN THE UNITED STATES (EXCEPT ALASKA) AT THE ELEVENTH CENSUS: 1890. One of the most important and exhaustive treatments of Native Americans in the 19th century. As indigenous Americans had generally not been well covered by previous censuses, it was decided under the administration of Superintendent Robert Porter to prepare this mammoth undertaking, which pays scrupulous, detailed attention to the present state of the Native Americans. Included are discussions of indigenous populations by state, status reports concerning life on the reservations, disbursement of populations on and off reservations, progress in schooling and employment, etc. Virtually every aspect of the topic is at least considered in this work, if not investigated in depth. The highly prized lithograph color plates of indigenous life by noted artists are the best such works undertaken in a government publication, and are of exceptional quality.
