The second and best edition of the official account of Cook's third voyage, during which he explored Hawaii and the western coasts of America, Canada, and Alaska. This copy is unusual in that the atlas plates (including the "Death of Cook" plate, which is not found in all copies) are bound in to the text at the appropriate locations. A prefatory note to the list of plates cautions binders against doing this unless specifically requested, as apparently was the case here: "As many of the Purchasers of this Work may choose to preserve the larger-sized Plates in a separate volume in folio...Booksellers are cautioned not to have them bound up, with the rest of the Plates, in the places of these volumes pointed out by the respective References, unless they receive particular directions for that purpose.""Cook's third voyage was organized to seek the Northwest Passage and to return [the islander] Omai to Tahiti. Officers of the crew included William Bligh, James Burney, James Colnett, and George Vancouver. John Webber was appointed artist to the expedition. After calling at Kerguelen Island, Tasmania, New Zealand, and the Cook, Tonga, and Society Islands, the expedition sailed north and discovered Christmas Island and the Hawaiian Islands, which Cook named the Sandwich Islands.
