The Ruba'iyat of Omar Khayyam. First thus. A handsome presentation copy of Edward Fitzgerald's translation of the Rubaiyat, first published 1859, here with an introduction by Sir Edward Denison Ross and inscribed by him, "Stopford A. Brooke with sincere regards from E. Denison Ross December 15? 1900. [in Arabic and then translated:] God hath Treasures beneath his Throne, The keys whereof are the Tongues of the Poets. (Traditional Saying of Mohammad)".Ross (1871- 1940), British orientalist and administrator, principal of the Calcutta Madrasa, 1901-14, and in 1916 founding director of the University of London's School of Oriental Studies (now SOAS).The recipient was Irish literary critic, writer and churchman Stopford Brooke (1832-1916). An attractive and nicely provenanced copy.
