Nordenskjöld was on the Swedish scientific expedition to the Antarctic (1901-1903) and would have had a particular interest in the results of the Discovery expedition. Physical Observations is notable for the series of eight lithographs of aurora observations including seven of aurora effects on thick brown paper.
