DICK, Philip K.
Inquire · Offered by Peter Harrington
A Scanner Darkly. First edition of the novel that inspired the 2006 animated film. Following the end of his fourth marriage in 1970, the author embarked on "a period of association with young people involved in the era's counterculture, an experience that he later lightly science‐fictionalized into a novel of drug addiction, A Scanner Darkly" (ANB).The title is from St Paul's first letter to the Corinthians: "For now we see through a glass darkly". Dick adapts the theological sentiment to reference the "holo-scanners" used by the protagonist Bob Arctor in his work as an undercover police agent. Arctor uses the scanners to spy on his own drug-using community, but cannot recognize himself in their footage.
