The Vicar of Wakefield. An interestingly bound example of Thomson's edition. Following a popular style, Rivière and, later, Bayntun-Rivière, produced various pictorial onlay bindings in morocco. The application of onlays onto block-stamped calf, however, is distinctive to their bindery during the 1920s.Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) and his idealized approach to historical subjects found a following among illustrators of the 1890s. He worked on his illustrations to Goldsmith's popular novel for two years. It was published in time for the Christmas market in 1890 and enjoyed enormous success.
