Skeat (1856-1953), a Cambridge anthropologist, joined the civil service in the Straits Settlements (modern day Malaysia). He made various expeditions inland to study native tribes in areas where Europeans had not previously ventured. Pagan Races of the Malay Peninsula is his major work on the subject. Scarce.
