History of the Peking Summer Palaces under the Ch'ing Dynasty.

£650 · Offered by Maggs Bros Ltd

Carroll Malone (1886-1973) came to Peking in 1911 where until 1917 he taught history at the newly founded Qinghua University. Upon his return to the United States he studied for a masters degree in history followed by a PhD at the University of Illinois. Malone’s study of the Summer Palaces is still regarded the best work on the subject. He sketches the history of the Yuan Ming Yuan , the Ji Chun Yuan , the Chang Chun Yuan , and the Yi He Yuan gardens in the North-west of Peking. He supplemented his work with a large number of interesting photographs taken after the plunder and destruction of these palaces in 1860 and 1900. They still manage to give a sense of the architectural creativity that these extraordinary visions of paradise represented.
