Within the Gates. First edition of this play. It was originally intended to be the script for a "geometrical and emotional" Hitchcock film (O'Casey, p. 89), but this fell through and it played instead at the Royalty Theatre in 1934. Despite its short run, garnered good reviews from both T.S. Eliot and Martin Shaw. The 1935 US production was banned by the Catholic Mayor of Boston.This copy contains three contemporary newspaper clippings of reviews of the play, loosely inserted.
