THE COMBINATION THOROUGHBRED STALLION ERWIN DAVIS...WILL STAND AT THE FAIR GROUNDS, SALINAS.... An illustrated California stud broadside, advertising the services of a stallion named Erwin Davis, set to "stand at the Fair Grounds, Salinas," during the upcoming season, which "commences Feb. 15 and ends Aug. 15, 1886." The stallion is pictured here in full stride in an attractive engraved illustration that takes up much of the upper half of the broadside. The text of the broadside begins with a lengthy description and review of Erwin Davis' impressive pedigree: "Was sired by the celebrated trotting horse 'Kentucky Hunter,' he by 'Broken-leg Hunter' (the sire of 'Flora Temple' of New York); grand sire, 'Sorrel Hunter;' g. g. sire, 'Imp. Highlander.' 'Erwin's dam was the magnificent trotting mare, 'Lost Diamond'; she by Vermont Hambletonian, the sire of True John, Green Mountain Maid, Grey Vermont and Sontag." The text goes on to list the records set by Erwin's colts: "Bay gelding Ed, on Bay District course, Feb. 14, 1885, in 2:29¾, and since that in 2:27; Carrie F., on Stockton course in 1885, in 2:27½; Ned, in 2:27 to wagon, on Bay District course; Gover C., at Sacramento in 1885, in 2:25½; Ike, yearling, in 3:01½, and at two years old in 2:31½; Diamond with 3 months training at San Jose, in 2:34." The price given is $35 for the season. The broadside is signed in type by "J.R. Davidson, Proprietor." Text and illustration are enclosed within a star-studded border. Advertisements
