A DESCRIPTION OF LOCOMOTIVES MANUFACTURED BY THE GRANT LOCOMOTIVE WORKS OF PATTERSON, N.J. A remarkable trade catalogue beautifully illustrated with thirty albumen print photographs of trains and train parts produced by the Grant Locomotive Works of Patterson, New Jersey. The catalogue provides general specifications and a photograph of each of the twelve engines manufactured by the Grant Locomotive Works at the time, a functional description of the fifty-seven engine parts they sold, as well as photographs of representative parts. The photographs were so skillfully taken by the New York studio portraitist and celebrity photographer, George Rockwood, that some them give the stylistic impression of modern art. This copy belonged to Yale Engineering graduate, inventor, and founder of Oswego Machine works, Niel Gray, Jr., whose estate left a bequest of $1 million dollars to the Yale English Department, which eventually became the Niel Gray, Jr., Endowed Professorship of English.Originally incorporated in 1852 as the New Jersey Locomotive and Machine Company, the company's name and charter changed under the ownership of Oliver DeForest Grant in 1867 to Grant Locomotive Works. The company initially gained a national reputation due to its standardization of locomotive parts - which they guaranteed would be interchangeable on all engines of the same class, but the new owner wanted additional exposure and advertising for the company.
