8612 miles in an Alvis 12/50 from India to England Davies, upon his retirement from the Indian Civil Service, was determined to drive his Alvis 12/50 from India to England 'without any vast preparation'. He was not the driver: that was his man Abdul Kader, who acted as driver, mechanic and man-servant to Davies on his travels. It took them just over three months to complete the journey, covering nearly 10,000 miles, either at the wheel of the car or in a train with the car onboard.
