An exceptionally rare prospectus for the little-known Girard Gold & Silver Mining Company, incorporated in Philadelphia but owning land within two miles of Central City, Colorado – known then as "The Richest Square Mile on Earth." In addition to the company by-laws, the prospectus contains an eight-page narrative including a general description of the lands owned by the company, which included properties located in the middle of forty-five of Gilpin County's finest lodes. To entice prospective investors, company president Suel Smith and company secretary Hiram Brower (who wrote the narrative) include a quote from Professor Edward Kent of the New York Assay Office regarding mines within a five mile radius of Central City: "As to their richness, I have no hesitation in saying that they are the richest mines ever discovered, and that in my estimation Colorado is destined to supercede even California or Australia as the Eldorado of the world."
