Kurokawa Kisho no sakuhin [The works of Kurokawa Kisho]

£2,500 · Offered by Maggs Bros Ltd

A spectacular expression of Metabolism; a post-War Japanese architecture movement characterised by its unusual, futuristic design. The present book, poster and vinyl record are dedicated to the work and ideas of Kurokawa Kisho (1934–2007) a founding member and influential Metabolism architect. The design of the book was brilliantly executed by a fellow Metabolism member Awazu Kiyoshi (1929-2009), combining interesting typography and photo-collage. One of the defining ideas of the Metabolism architects was the Capsule. In essence, this was a system of modular design, where by buildings could grow and expand. The most famous example was the Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo, which was sadly knocked down in 2022. A small number of Metabolism buildings survive today, and are dotted around Japan. Scarce in commerce.
