Myth and Reality. First American edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to the Bhagavad Gītā translator: "Pour Winthrop Sargeant qui aime les mythes et sait où chercher les réalités, avec l'hommage de l'auteur, Mircea Eliade, Chicago Juillet 1966" ("For Winthrop Sargeant, who loves myths and knows where to seek realities, with the author's compliments, Mircea Eliade, Chicago, July 1966").Alongside his career as a music critic for the New Yorker, Sargeant (1903-1986) was a student of Sanskrit and Indian religion. He devoted fifteen years to an interlinear translation of the Bhagavad Gita, first published by Doubleday in 1979. Eliade later endorsed Sargeant's work in the SUNY Press edition, congratulating him on his "labor of love" and praising the translation for making the Gita accessible "in all its splendid and profound complexity".
