Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality. Authorized Translation by James Strachey. First UK edition, the first English translation to incorporate Freud's final revisions, of his incisive studies on sexual perversion, childhood sexuality, and puberty. This translation benefitted from the help and approval of Freud's daughter Anna. This copy was formerly owned by the prominent consultant psychiatrist Valerie Cowie (1924-2023), with her ink signature on the front free endpaper.Freud foregrounded sexuality throughout his work: he understood it as the most direct and essential link between psychology and biology, and a neat way of sidestepping questions of mind and body.He originally published his Drei Abhandlungen zur Sexualtheorie in German in 1905 and continued to revise the text until his death in 1939. This translation was undertaken by a long-time patient of Freud, the writer James Strachey (1887-1967), who devoted much of his life to translating Freud's works into English. An English translation was published in the US in 1910.
