In 1804 Benjamin Silliman, Sr., as the newly appointed professor of chemistry and natural history at Yale, was commissioned by the trustees of the college to tour Europe for the purpose of enlarging the library and acquiring scientific instruments. This work prints his journal of the trip from April 1805 to April 1806. The three folding plates include two views in profile and one overview of Stonehenge.
